REVIEW OF THE LEDUC CHAMBER'S

ACHIEVEMENTS & HIGHLIGHTS OF 2009

MISSION STATEMENT:

"The Leduc and District Chamber of Commerce exists to build prosperity by initiating and linking services and resources for the betterment of our membership and the business community."

 VISION STATEMENT:

"To maximize member value by developing a responsive and innovative organizational culture focused on advocacy, communication, networking and value added benefits."

MEMBERSHIP

The Chamber staff has continued the function of membership development in 2008-09, including new memberships and retention of existing members.  Membership has increased from 550 members in 2008 to 570 at the end of September and to those members who have renewed their investment for 2009 we sincerely thank you and to our new members welcome and we look forward to your participation in building a stronger Chamber and in a turn a stronger community. A complete Membership Roster, including address, phone, fax and contact name are included in the Annual Report.

The affiliations of the Leduc Chamber with the Canadian and Alberta Chambers of Commerce offer significant benefits to its members and membership in the Chamber is the only way to obtain access to these plans. The Group Insurance Plan and other programs offered by the Alberta Chambers provide Chamber members options and benefits, showing them that their membership in the Chamber is a valuable investment.

GROUP INSURANCE
Canada's Leading Plan in Group Benefits for Firms with 1-50 Employees.

The Chamber of Commerce Group Insurance Plan allows a firm as small as one person to access a comprehensive group insurance/employee benefits package, offering extended health care, Life insurance, critical illness, best doctors, dental care, disability coverage and accidental death and dismemberment.  The plan is especially designed for the employer with under three employees who may not otherwise be able to provide a group benefit program for employees – no business is too small.   Dennis Chamney is our marketing representative for the area and currently we have over sixty Leduc Chamber members participating in the program.

MONTHLY LUNCHEONS

Since January of 2003, Sponsorship opportunities were introduced which enabled businesses to promote themselves to hundreds in the Leduc and District's business community during our Monthly Luncheons. These sponsors are entitled to a 10-minute presentation, sales/collateral materials on the tables, tabletop signage and complimentary lunch for two. In addition to monthly speakers, announcements and introduction of all our new members are part of our agenda, and as well a number of door prizes and a 50/50 draw are an enjoyable part of our Luncheon that average over 150 people per month and were extremely excited to have the September Luncheon at the new Leduc Recreation Centre with over 300 guests.   The format of a "Soap Box Infomercial" continues to be popular and is something different from the traditional luncheon agenda with a guest speaker. Each table is asked to appoint a spokesperson who would speak on any topic, encouraging them to learn something about each person at their table and to include the entire group. It proved to be interactive, informative, and, depending on the presenter, slightly humorous. The feedback was so positive that the "Soap Box Infomercial" format was again held at the January luncheon.  At the March Lunch and Learn, Dr. Christine Brown, spoke on "Research Biz" was very well received and a second one will be held at the November Luncheon.  The December Christmas luncheon is held jointly with the Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Authority, with attendance at this event of over 420 business leaders and associates from the community and within the region. The business community continues to support the Leduc & District Food Bank and Santa's Helpers program at this event.

BUSINESS & COMMUNTIY SERVICES SOURCE BOOK

The Source Book is a combined effort of the Chamber and City Family & Community Support  Services, which is distributed free of charge to all businesses and residents in Leduc and surrounding communities in the Leduc market area. The City of Leduc, Leduc County, hotels and motels, real estate agents, Welcome Wagon, and other outlets, such as restaurants or gas bars, are also provided with copies of the directory for distribution. The Source Book lists businesses in the yellow pages section as well as  residential and businesses in the white pages format. The directory includes the City of Leduc, the Nisku Industrial Park, the Edmonton International Airport and Leduc County; as well as the communities of Beaumont, Calmar, Devon, Millet, New Sarepta, Nisku, Thorsby and Warburg, including Rollyview, Sunnybrook and Alsike. As well, postal codes and maps of Leduc, Nisku, Leduc County and the Airport are also included. The directory is an excellent reference and promotional item, which has proven over the past years to be of great assistance with inquiries from all over North America regarding Leduc and area. Advertising was sold over the summer months, changes were implemented by Chamber Staff and summer students and the printing and distribution of twenty-five thousand copies will be completed in early November.

TOURISM INFORMATION CENTRE

Since the official opening on September 19th, 1995, the Chamber continues the ownership, operation and management of our Tourist Information Centre.    The Chamber of Commerce and the Leduc-Nisku Economic Development Authority occupy the building. This enables our community to promote Tourism, Commerce and Economic Development from a conveniently situated and highly visible location to provide businesses, residents and visitors to the community their commerce and tourism needs. The Commerce & Tourism Information Centre has red mosaic tiling with the word "LEDUC" that greets visitors as they enter the building. The Centre contains many other features such as a boardroom for meetings and large public washrooms.  The facility is also designed to be the second location for disaster services. The facility has a trailer sani-dump that services travellers and local residents, as well as a grassed picnic and rest area. We have an attractive and functional facility the whole community can be proud of!

The Chamber of Commerce became the home of a permanent sign that incorporates the logo of the City of Leduc, the acknowledgement of the tenants - Leduc Chamber of Commerce and Leduc Nisku Economic Development Authority and the presence of Tourist Information "?" logo.   The incorporation of a manual, changeable reader board serves the function as a community events' information board. The sign announces all major events or festivals held in our community as well as meetings and events of the Chamber and the EDA. As the sign is located at the north "gateway" into Leduc, this sign is highly visible and is equipped with a light sensitive photocell, which activates the sign.   Additional signage on the front and back of the building has been added to increase our visibility as well.

In 2007 summer an application was made to have another sign placed on our property adjacent to the sani-dump station. An opportunity was provided to RV dealerships and auto/RV related services for sponsorship and to have their name and logo displayed on the sign. Six businesses came forward to become our first RV Sani-Station Sponsor through a 3 year contract. The revenue generated from those advertising on the sign will help to offset our costs of maintaining the site and to be able to continue to offer service to all RV units using the sewage disposal site. Additional revenue has also been generated during the tourism season at the sani-dump location where a donation box has been placed; this was built and donated by Devcan Machines.

In the summer of 2008, the chamber applied for Accreditation under the Alberta Visitor Information Providers Tourism Signage Initiative and based upon a visit with Rebecca Smart of Alberta Tourism and a review of the criteria, we were informed that our centre meets the criteria for eligibility and will receive no-cost signage and accreditation. A representative from Guide Signs reviewed the City and we were informed that two large highway #2 signs will be installed as well as several signs within the City of Leduc   These signs include a wild rose icon, the "?" symbol , directional information and the words Visitor Info. We were very excited that we are able to offer the highest level of visitor services and visibility through this program and graphic image on the Alberta Road Map, Travel Alberta website.

HOSPITALITY PACKAGES

The Chamber has provided over 500 packages to various organizations, service clubs, sports groups, school organizations, with promotional material on various venues in Leduc in hosting tournaments of all kinds. World, national and provincial events were hosted by various groups in Leduc and directly related to promoting tourism in our City.

CEREMONIAL SCISSORS

Purchased in November 2003 the large scissors are available for grand openings or special celebration events where there is a ribbon cutting ceremony. The scissors were used for several special occasions and have brought recognition to the Chamber and photo opportunities galore. Our President, Executive, Board members and staff were pleased to have had the opportunity to attend some of the grand opening functions and participate in the ribbon cutting.

"CHAMBER VOICE " NEWSLETTER

The Chamber Voice, our monthly newsletter, continues to be one of our main methods of communication with the Leduc business community. Our local newspaper, The Leduc Representative continues to support the Chamber, which is greatly appreciated, by including the Chamber Voice in their publication, providing information to our community on Leduc Chamber events and programs. The 2009 monthly circulation of the Chamber Voice is printed and delivered by the Leduc Representative to businesses and residents in Leduc and all surrounding communities, with extra copies available at our office. A mini Chamber Voice is also faxed and e-mailed to all our members each month as well.

BUSINESS AFTER HOURS

A new format of business mixers was launched in 2005 on a quarterly basis, to provide the opportunity for businesses to host a "Business After Hours" event on their premises, to showcase their business to other associates. There was only one mixer held in October of 2008 and that was hosted by Canadian Western Bank to celebrate their grand opening at their new location. They opened their doors for tours, hors d'oeuvres, refreshments and a presentation of their business. It is anticipated that the "Business After Hours" format will continue to generate business interest in sponsoring and hosting this type of mixer at their business location.  Average attendance at these events ranged from 50 to 75 persons.

LADIES NIGHT OUT, "DIVAS… L.A. Style"

The Ladies Night was held on April 24, 2009. With over 400 ladies attending it turned out to be a fun and successful evening for all who attended. The evening began with a delicious buffet dinner prepared by Eagle's Nest Catering, and was followed by entertainment provided by Hypnotist Colin Christopher, who kept the ladies in stitches. Our emcee for the evening was Kirk Cayer from Leduc G8teway Radio, who did an amazing job to help keep the feeling of the evening up. The bar & Table service was handled by our board and members who volunteered their time. The committee who worked to put this event on should be proud of the great evening, as everyone who attended enjoyed themselves, and are looking forward to 2011. Raffle Prizes and table sponsors were from local businesses. Silent Auction, with over 130 items and a grand door prize (a Diamond & Ruby Ring donated by Leduc Goldsmiths), was another added highlight to the evening. We are very grateful for the local support from the members & businesses as the evening would not have been possible with out them.

MAN SHOW – LEDUC & DISTRICT TRADE SHOW

No Show in 2009, as it is held every two years.

CLEAN-UP CAMPAIGN

The goal of the Pitch In Clean-up campaign is to promote public awareness and pride in a clean community. In past years schools have participated and cleaned their yards and surrounding areas; youth groups cleaned city streets, industrial areas and along the highways. The Chamber is pleased to continue to be a part of the Pitch-In campaign, distributing Pitch-In bags to the schools, and encouraging the schools to participate in a clean school yard competition. The Chamber arranges for the schools to be judged and all schools were sent participation certificates, with first, second and third place awards presented by the Chamber. As well, local businesses and residents were encouraged to clean-up around their homes and businesses, parks and public areas. We distributed pitch-in bags to our members at our luncheon to encourage their participation

ANNUAL AWARDS OF DISTINCTION DINNER

The Annual Awards Gala is the Chamber's most prestigious social event of the year and was held on January 31st 2009 at the Executive Royal Inn. Our Master of Ceremonies for the night, Oscar Klak, would be welcomed as host anywhere. With jokes galore, he kept everyone in stitches throughout the evening. The elegant wine-tasting dinner with each course paired was once again another triumph.  Businesses and residents who attended enjoyed this very special celebration, which included presentations of the 2008 Awards of Distinction and included recognition of the  Citizen of the Year, Public Service, Customer Service Award, Business of the Year and Farm Business of the Year. This year we also celebrated our Chamber Manager's, Iris Yanish, 25th year with the Leduc & District Chamber of Commerce. The business community once again supported this major Chamber fundraising event by contributing to the silent auction, sponsoring, and attending the function.

AIRPORT VIEW PARK

Aircraft enthusiasts of all ages can now comfortably get the best view of aircraft taking off and landing at the new Edmonton International Airport View Park. Located adjacent to the Tourist Information Centre, the EIA View Park is directly east of Hwy. 2 and Runway 12/30 (southeast/northwest). The location is ideal because aircraft are still very low in their ascent or descent as they soar over the park and directly over the Centre.
The EIA View Park was constructed by Edmonton Airports and the landscaped area is equipped with permanent picnic tables, a waste receptacle, a paved stone walkway and access to the adjacent centre. An interpretive display allows aircraft enthusiasts to identify some of the most commonly seen aircraft at EIA and overviews the storied history of Canada's fifth busiest and fastest growing international airport. It is a comfortable setting for aircraft enthusiasts.
"Edmonton Airports is strongly committed to aviation education and heritage, and the EIA View Park provides visitors and residents alike with a welcoming new area to observe the power and wonder of aviation", stated Reg Milley, Edmonton Airports President and CEO.
We often see people viewing the planes from the park and it's becoming a popular lunch destination in the warm weather. It's a great way to learn more about the aircraft we see every day and to introduce young people to the joys of aviation.

MEMBER TO MEMBER DISCOUNT PROGRAM

A new program was offered to Chamber members and was implemented June 1st, 2005. Businesses who registered in the Member to Member Discount Program offer exclusive discounts and/or special incentives to fellow chamber members. There is no registration fee to participate in the program and   members can register at any time to be added to the program. With 33 members initially joining the program, to date there are now 77 members registered.

LEDUC COMMUNITY BUSINESS SIGNS

The Community Business Signs that provided local businesses with the opportunity to advertise on Highway 2, the busiest traffic corridor in the province, were taken over by the Dept. of Transportation in 2006. This resulted in a loss of revenue for the Chamber and other municipalities/Chambers along the Highway 2 corridor. The Leduc Chamber does however continue to provide business signage for Highway 39, Highway 2A and Highway 623 (Rollyview Road). The nine-panel signs are sold to Leduc businesses, providing them an opportunity to advertise that they are located in the community.

LOGO SIGNS – Highway #2

The Leduc and District Chamber of Commerce has been contracted by Guide Signs and the City of Leduc to manage the new Logo Signs and we are delighted to continue providing signage and trust that they will provide the increased motoring public with business identification information for our local area business advertisers. The well-designed signage has supported our efforts to put Leduc on the tourist map as well.

There are a limited amount of panels that are available on each sign. The signs allocated to Food, Gas and Lodging will host 6 panels per sign while the Other Businesses sign will contain nine (9) panels each. Twelve businesses to date have signed up for the Logo and we are looking to having the installation scheduled this fall. We are confident that more businesses will be interested when the new signs are in place.

SPECIAL PROMOTION PARTNER – Edmonton Oilers & Edmonton Oil Kings  Hockey Club & Edmonton Eskimos

All those who attended had a fun time at "Leduc Day"! We value our partnership with the sports clubs of Edmonton, and are pleased that they include the communities from within the Edmonton region who continue to support NHL hockey & CFL Football in Alberta.

On November 29th, 2008 and March 15th, 2009 had a Leduc & District Chamber of Commerce night when the Oil Kings met with the Moose Jaw and Red Deer teams respectively and the member that participated had a great time. We were invited to participate in Leduc Day at the Edmonton Oliers vs. San Jose Sharks, on April 2, 2009 once again it was a great evening enjoyed by all. And the Edmonton Eskimos invited us to take in the games on October 17th, 2008, September 11th & 26th, 2009. These games were an exciting time and we are grateful for the opportunity to go.

ALBERTA DAIRY CONGRESS – 2009 " MIX AND MINGLE"

The Chamber office once again managed the 23rd Annual Alberta Dairy Congress, June 4& 5. With the enhancement of the Recreational Facility and construction at the Leduc Curling Club, the Congress was limited to the Black Gold Centre only and limited to 20-30 booths. We look forward to the completion of the Leduc Rec Centre and larger Congress in 2010. The goal of the Congress is to provide an excellent opportunity for the Milk Producers of Alberta to experience the latest equipment, products and management technology available.  The first-class, two-day event, consists of a trade show, Holstein Black & White show, a Red & White Holstein show, and the Herdbuilder Sale; as well as breakfasts, barbecues, social events, petting zoo, fashion show and milk drinking contest. This years theme was "Mix & Mingle", and although attendance was lower that in previous years, the committee members are to be commended for their dedicated efforts in showcasing the dairy industry and once again hosting another successful event.

ALBERTA SMALL BUSINESS WEEK

During Alberta Small Business Week in 2008, a Business After Hours was held in October 16 at Canadian Western Bank.   This networking mixer featured tours of the bank, refreshments, hors d'oeuvres and provided an opportunity for businesses to network at an informative, social event.   The management were thrilled with the exposure they received.

FEDERAL ELECTION FORUM

At our October Luncheon we have invited all the candidates for Edmonton–Leduc and hosting a mini forum. This gave the opportunity for each candidate to be introduced and expand on their political platform at a business luncheon for our members. As well the Chamber hosted an evening Political Candidates' Forum on Wednesday, October 8th, 2008 at the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts.

LEDUC-NISKU ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY

Ashley Robbins, appointed by City Council on the recommendation of the Chamber, sat on the Leduc-Nisku EDA Board for the term of 2008 and 2009. Patricia Klak, Executive Director of the EDA continues to serve as a Director on the Chamber Board. This liaison also enhances the provision of service to prospective community businesses as well as those in the existing core. With the Leduc-Nisku EDA located in the Commerce and Tourism Centre, its great location continues to provide easy public access with high visibility. Having all the business-related services under one roof makes life easier for those wanting economic information and business assistance.

ALBERTA AND CANADIAN CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE INVOLVEMENT

Our affiliation with the Alberta Chambers of Commerce has again been very worthwhile in providing a means for our concerns to be presented to both the provincial and federal governments. During May of 2009, chamber delegates, President Donna, Past President Debbie and Manager Iris and Rod Yanish attended the Alberta Chambers of Commerce Annual General meeting in Grande Prairie. We are pleased to have Murray Hales, who just completed his term as Past  President of the Alberta Chambers of Commerce, continue on the Policy Committee, representing the Leduc Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber Manager, Iris Yanish, is a member of the Alberta Chamber Executives, a group of Chamber managers, who provide information sharing and on-going communication across the province and is currently finished her second term as Treasurer.

Manager Iris Yanish attended the 80th Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in Victoria, BC on October 3-5. Delegates and speakers discussed competitiveness issues brought on by fast pace globalization, and the resulting challenges and opportunities that Canadian businesses are faced with. The meeting's workshop sessions featured business leaders and academics that provided the conference with expert insights and unique international perspective. In addition, the AGM's Policy Resolutions session provides an opportunity for delegates to debate and vote on policy issues that will form the basis for the Canadian Chamber's mandate for the year ahead. These resolutions really capture the priorities that the business community considers critical and will endorse the year ahead. And of course, there are the various networking events and opportunities that occur throughout the three days of the AGM with some 400 attendees from across the country.

CITY OF LEDUC AND LEDUC COUNTY INVOLVEMENT

Liaison with our local governments continues, with City Mayor Greg Krischke and County Councillor Mary-Ann Macdonald serving as our representatives at Chamber general and board of director's meetings. It has resulted in better co-operation between the City, County and our organization, and will continue to enhance the overall development of Leduc and surrounding community in general. Since 1992 the City of Leduc has had Chamber representatives sit on the City's Budget Committee, Environment Board, and other committees such as the Drug Action Committee. Both the County and City are very supportive of Chamber events, such as the Annual Santa Claus Parade, Awards Gala, etc.

Since 1997, based upon an agreement between the City of Leduc and the Leduc and District Chamber of Commerce, it was agreed that the Chamber would administer the Promotional activities on their behalf. With input from the City staff, the Chamber continues to select the activities in which it will be involved. Some of the major activities include: print advertising, parades, brochures, maps, promotional items, etc.The second component was a grant from the City to assist in the staffing of the Tourist Information Centre during the summer months. The Centre is open to visitors during normal business hours year round and extended hours in the evenings and weekends during the summer months from May to August. In 2009 we welcomed over 5000 registered visitors, which do not include the numbers of visitors who dropped in and didn't sign our guest book, or those who stopped by only to utilize the services of the RV sani-station or check out the Airport View Park, both located on our site.

CITY PROMOTION – City Float and "Cudel"

The Chamber continues to be involved with the City's float, manned by Earl and Lil Jespersen and Ron and Ann Taylor, and representing the new generation was Kiera Stenhouse, by scheduling its attendance at various parades throughout the summer. This year the City's float was entered in 15 parades around the province and at Edmonton's Capital Ex won the Best Entry outside the Region, Grand Champion and Grand Prize for Best Overall Entry earned over $2,500 Award, as well as numerous other awards.   President Donna was able to make three parades, The Calgary Stampede Parade, Capital EX in Edmonton and the Beaumont Parade to promote the Chamber riding on the float and getting the crowd involved in the thrill of the festivities. The float is stored at the Chamber site during the summer months in the trailer that is used for transporting the float. As well, Cudel, Leduc's oil drop mascot, is also kept at the Chamber and is scheduled to attend various functions in Leduc and within the region throughout the year. Mini-Cudels are available to promote Cudel and which will provide a unique souvenir of Leduc for residents and those visiting our community throughout the year.

GREATER EDMONTON REGION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The Leduc Chamber of Commerce continues to be a member of the regional Chamber group (GERCC), representing business in the greater Edmonton area. Chambers represented include Devon, Edmonton, Ft. Saskatchewan, Leduc, Legal, Morinville, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove and Stony Plain. Over the past few years, GERCC has been working together informally and have been very successful in facilitating several significant projects affecting the business environment in the Edmonton region.   We have participated in the Land Use Committee of the Capital Regional Board, which was chaired by Mayor Stephen Mandel, as Chambers' play an important leadership and unifying role in the Alberta Business community.

TICKET SALES

As the Chamber office is in a location well known in the community and is easily accessible, several groups had approached the Chamber office to assist with ticket sales for their events. The Chamber's Ticket Outlet for events at the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts or other venues in Leduc has kept quite busy. For ticket purchases made by Visa or MasterCard, the Chamber charges a fee of $2.00 per ticket to offset costs of transaction charges. And, as these same events are often posted on the reader board sign at the Chamber site, passers-by would see the announcement and stop at the Chamber to pick up tickets. In providing this ticket service for the residents, the Chamber is helping to support other organizations in the community. For the 2009-2010 Season, tickets will only be available directly from Tix on the Square or purchased in person or by phone at the Leduc Recreation Centre.

LEDUC BLACK GOLD DAYS PARADE

The Chamber again co-ordinated the annual Leduc Black Gold Days Parade, held May 2nd, 2009, with this year's theme "Celebrating the Past 40 Years" of the Black Gold Rodeo. With the weather cooperating this year, we had over ninety entries and thousands of people who came out to line 50 Street to watch the parade. As a kick off to rodeo week The "Spirit of the West" contest was again sponsored by the Chamber to encourage businesses to dress western and decorate their premises. Winners of this contest, as well as parade trophies for first, second and third place winners in eight categories were presented at the May Chamber luncheon.

CHAMBER WEBSITE

The Chamber website was completely redesigned and launched on September 2nd, 2009. The website has proven to be an effective and valuable tool not only for our membership, but for many visitors to our site. The website allows us to share our activities and services for Leduc & District businesses and includes an up-to-date Community Events Calendar for our community. To keep informed of what's new with the Leduc Chamber, visit our website at www.leduc-chamber.com

SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS CONTEST, SANTA SUIT RENTALS

The Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with The Representative, co-ordinated the "Spirit of Christmas" contest, with awards given to the businesses displaying their finest Christmas spirit in areas of music, decoration, dress and staff spirit. In December, the Chamber was also very busy with Santa Suits rentals, a valuable service provided to businesses, schools and community groups. Five Santa Suits, each complete with a wig and beard, belt, boot covers and bells, are booked steadily during the festive season. Mrs. Claus and several elves are also available for rent.

SANTA CLAUS PARADE & WINTER FESTIVITIES

Following the overwhelming success of the first Santa Claus Parade held in 2004, the community was very supportive to continue with making the parade an annual event.  Working with the City of Leduc, and with support from Leduc County, local businesses, and city and county residents, an enthusiastic committee planned and organized yet another successful event Friday evening, November 28th 2008. The crowds gathered on 50th Avenue were again more than anticipated, with hundreds of people coming out for the evening to enjoy a very colourful parade, with most entries bright with colourful lights and playing Christmas music. Entertainment followed at Alexandra Arena/Park with free hot chocolate, hot dogs and candy canes provided to all who attended.  As well, there were hay wagon rides, skating and Santa's Reindeer for families to enjoy. The whole evening was a tremendous success due to the community support and contributions of many local businesses that helped sponsor this great outdoor experience. Left over buns and wieners were donated to the Leduc Food Bank. The Chamber's float, Complete with Santa & Mrs. Claus, is decorated by Chamber staff and Board members.

IN CONCLUSION

Year 2010 will continue to format a steady growth on the part of the organization of existing projects and incorporation of new ideas. These projects and ideas once again expand and improve through the involvement of enthusiastic Board of Directors and Committee members and the participation of the Membership.
